My Tool List
Below are a list of tools that I use on my everyday bike travels. These items are links to Amazon where I receive a small commission from your purchase, but you pay nothing extra. Purchasing through these links helps me pay for this site and its content.
Basic Tool Kit
These are items that I carry with me all the time, no matter where I am riding. This kit provides you with everything you need to do basic repairs in an urban setting. What do i mean by ‘Urban Setting’? Well this is an environment where if you don’t have the right tool, you can get on the phone and get help; hitch hike back to town; or in some other fashion get help without fear of being stranded overnight.
Multi Tool:
The Silca, for the money, is the best single tool you can own. Yes it is on the pricey side, but combined with the torque tool, it makes bike maintenance a breeze. I have carried this tool for the last 4 years and never looked back.
Tire Levers:
Such a simple thing, but oh so different. The Schwalbe tire irons are strong enough not too break or damage your precious carbon rims. Narrow enough to get in behind the toughest tubeless tire bead.
Patch Kit:
For those not running tubeless, having a simple glueless patch kit is invaluable. Always carry a spare tube, but I like to patch my tubes and preserve my pristine spare for those times when patches just wont do.
Traditional Multi Tool
If the Silca is a bit too rich for your budget, the Crank Brother multi tools can’t be beat and in fact, they make a great back up tool for the Silca.
Tire Sealant
Most people are running tubeless these days at is just so much more convenient and provides a peace of mind that tubes just can’t do. I love Orange Seal and use it all year round, although they do offer a version that is more targeted at winter/cold weather riding.
Chain Tool
If you go with the Silca multi tool then I would suggest you also add a chain breaker to your kit along with spare links. If you go with the Crank Brothers tool then the chain breaker is one of the integrated tools and is not needed. In general, the multi tools like the crank brothers provide great convenience but often at the expense of usability which is why I prefer separate tools for separate functions.
Valve Core Removal Tool
DynaPlug
Tubeless is great and sealant works amazingly well, however their are times when you get a big enough gash in your tire that sealant just won’t do the trick. The Dynaplug tool is small and light and will patch those holes and gashes that sealant won’t fix.
Chain Quick Links
Inflation Tool
I have largely stopped carrying a pump on my day to day riding and instead rely on a CO2 inflator and CO2 cartridges to get me out of any trouble. On longer trips I carry a small micro size pump as an added safety measure.
